How to get your New York driver's license
Every first-time New York driver needs a permit, practice time, and the 5-hour pre-licensing course before the road test.
Your path
All new drivers
Every new driver must take the 5-hour course before the road test. If you're 18 or older you can take it online — under 18, the DMV requires the classroom version.
- 01
Pass the written permit test
Study the NY Driver's Manual and pass the knowledge test at the DMV to get your learner permit.
- 02
Practice with your permit
Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 at night.
- 03
Take the 5-hour pre-licensing course
Required for all new drivers. Take it online if you're 18 or older — your completion is filed with the DMV automatically. Under 18, you'll need the classroom version.
